- Alternative-fuels sources deliver for freight
carriers
Freight
carriers and equipment suppliers are under more pressure than ever
to run fuel-efficient operations and reduce dependence on crude
oil. Some alternatives that are available or could become
available include biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, hydrogen,
natural gas and propane. DC Velocity (11/2007)
- White House plans to rework stance on illegal
hires
The
Bush administration is temporarily backing off a push to enforce
new rules punishing firms for hiring illegal immigrants, papers
filed last week in federal court indicate. The motion asks a
federal district court judge to suspend the case until late March
to allow the Department of Homeland Security to rework the rule
and further study its possible impact on small business. The White
House said it believes the amended rule would "fully address the
court's concerns." The New York Times (11/25)
- Economists, Fed still think economy can avoid a
recession
The
Federal Reserve and most private economists are holding firm to
views that the U.S. economy can avoid a recession, even as
investors signal otherwise. But figuring out who is right, even
with history as a guide, isn't easy. "Economists are extremely bad
at predicting turning points, and we don't pretend to be any
better," Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke told Congress recently. The Wall Street Journal (subscription

- Gender communication differences apparent in
"he-mail," "she-mail"
E-mail
is not exempt from the differences between the way males and
females communicate, and certain gender patterns can be identified
in e-mail, an expert says. For one thing, men's e-mails tend to be
terse, while women's e-mails tend to be detailed. Advice for men
includes making sure to respond to e-mail with at least one full
sentence, while women are advised to avoid becoming too personal
in their missives. American City Business Journals (11/5)

- Sales team should be able to read prospects' body
language
Sales
prospects send strong nonverbal signs that sales reps need to be
able to interpret. Consider administering a short quiz on reading
body language, such as the one included in this article, to help
sales professionals become more adept at recognizing prospects'
"buy signals." Manage Smarter (11/15)

- Breaking up with customer is hard to do
Sometimes,
businesses need to cut back on clients to provide the best service
to ones that promise long-term value to the company. "You don't
want to be rude, but sometimes your customers can be overly
demanding or confrontational, and those are times you may want to
assess whether it's worthwhile to keep them," says Vikram Mathur
of the Michigan Small Business and Technology Development Center.
