Diversified manufacturer Eaton Corp. is set to acquire Saturn Electronics & Engineering's fuel components division. • Goodyear's Wingfoot Express marks its 90th year
Goodyear celebrated the 90th anniversary of its Wingfoot Express interstate truck line Monday. The company had one five-ton Packard in 1917 that pioneered the first interstate trucking route and grew it into an entire fleet.   Business Strategy
  • Crisis preparation is key
Consider employee safety, office policies and day-to-day operations when developing a crisis or disaster preparedness plan. Predicting when an emergency situation will occur is tricky, but you can avoid devastation by thinking ahead and taking precautions. IndustryWeek (3/28)
  • Use off-sites as more than "same meeting, different place"
Don't waste what could be a very productive off-site meeting by holding a typical office gathering or by forcing employees to climb ropes and scale walls under the guise of a team building exercise, says one coaching consultant. Instead, use the off-site get-together as an "opportunity to get away from the office and resolve issues so everyone in the company can move forward with a clean slate." Inc.com (3/2007)
  Sales & Marketing Tips

  Management Style
  • Boomer managers adjust to millennials' work habits
Baby boomer managers are finding they must adjust some of their managerial practices when dealing with millennial employees -- those who grew up on the Internet and enjoy a casual workplace but expect to climb the career ladder quickly. They comprise about 10% of the work force, but their presence is making a deepening impact. Forward (4/2007)
  Small Business Operations
  • Columnist: Maximize productivity during start-up phase
Build good time-saving, and therefore money-saving, habits during the beginning phase of your business. Develop a routine of letting voicemail pick up less-pressing calls and ignoring some e-mails, and your business will be better for it in the long-term. "Don't let time control you. Instead, control how you use it," USA TODAY small-business columnist Gladys Edmunds says. USA TODAY/Small Biz (4/3)
  • Hiring decisions shouldn't be rushed
A new hire should be looked at as an investment in the company, even when there is a pressing need to quickly fill a vacant position. Taking time in the beginning to search for, interview and effectively train the right person will save time in the long run, because the goal is to hire a person who's both a good and long-lasting fit for the company.
